The third International Doctoral consortium on Management and Organizational studies, co-sponsored by York University’s PhD in Human Resources Management, took place in Halifax from 3-5 June. This event has grown considerably in the past three years, originally founded by the York University’s PhD program in HRM and Sobey Business School, St Mary's University. It is now co-sponsored by seven universities or university departments: Queen Mary, University of London; University of Eastern Finland; UMASS, Boston; Sobey Business School, St Mary’s University; School of HRM, York University, Athabasca University doctor of business administration program and; FGV, School of Administration, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This year our consortium welcomed 38 students and 22 faculty members from 7 schools, 4 countries and 3 continents. A full and robust agenda was offered that allowed students to engage with a wide range of topics within management, human resources and organization studies.
We were delighted to welcome noted scholar, Professor Hugh Willmott from the University of Cardiff, UK as our Keynote Speaker who presented his talk on, “Research as a Craft? Reflections on the Credentials of Management Knowledge.”
During the three day consortium, students were exposed to a wide variety of faculty workshops (please refer to attached program). Professors Steve McKenna and Kelly Thomson from York University also facilitated workshops relating to their research. This year’s PhD student group from York University’s School of Human Resource Management program consisted of Amanda Peticca-Harris, Anita Boey, Nadia deGama, and Shayna Frawley.
Through a variety of presentation sessions and informal conversations, all doctoral students had a chance to discuss various research ideas and receive feedback. We are particularly grateful to all faculty members who showed a genuine interest in our work and having the opportunity to connect with fellow doctoral students from around the world. We are already looking forward to next year’s International Doctoral Consortium!
